You are inside a universe shaped like a two-holed donut.

Thousands of coloured particles follow a single rule: each colour is attracted to, or repelled by, every other colour. From that alone, cells, worms and hunters emerge.

Their world is curved space, the hyperbolic plane, folded up into a closed surface. The octagon in the centre is the entire universe. Leave through any edge and you re-enter through the opposite one.

So every other octagon you see is the same universe again, seen along a different path around the holes. The copies shrink toward the rim because space itself grows exponentially there.
